It’s time to check in (for real, for real)

Reader, Happy FriYAYYYY! It has been a minute since we’ve last chatted, but I hope today’s JOYrney Mail™ helps you find release and rediscover grace in the areas where you need it most.

Let’s dive in!

Hey Reader,

As we move closer to the end of the year, I’ve been doing some serious heart work – and I wanted to share a little of that with you.

Life with a 6-month-old (yes, Kaiya is 6 months now! 🎉) has been the most beautiful, humbling, and refining experience I’ve had in a long time. It’s challenged me to confront parts of myself I didn’t even know needed attention.

To be honest, I’ve had to face:

  • Parts of my identity that I didn’t realize I was holding onto so tightly
  • Areas of unbelief that I thought I’d conquered (only to find out... not quite)
  • Mindset traps that I didn’t realize had become idols – and how they were holding me back spiritually

I’m being stretched in ways that require me to pour out everything I thought I knew so that I can be refilled with God’s wisdom. And through it all, one message keeps coming back to me:

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” – Proverbs 4:23

This verse hit differently for me recently. It’s easy to think about "guarding your heart" as protecting it from harm or negativity, but what about protecting it from ourselves – from our doubts, pride, and misplaced motivations?

Here are 5 heart-check questions I’ve been sitting with lately:

  1. Do my desires and goals truly reflect the long-term vision God has given me?
  2. Have I placed some of my aspirations on a pedestal (aka turned them into idols)?
  3. Am I operating out of faith or fear?
  4. What steps do I need to take to re-align with God’s heart for me?
  5. What am I holding on to that I need to release so I can move forward with clarity?

Whew. Facing myself with this level of honesty has been a bit ROUGH, but also freeing. I’m starting to feel a weight lifted as I surrender what’s not mine to carry. I’m realizing that this entire season – every challenge, every shift, every heart-check – is truly an act of grace.

And for that, I’m grateful.

I know I’m not alone in this.

So, I want to invite you into this reflection process with me. As we finish out 2024, I’d love to hear from you:

  • What lessons is your heart leading you to process right now?
  • How will those lessons shape the way you approach the new year?

If you feel led, I’d love to hear your thoughts – just hit "reply" and share. Your words don’t have to be polished or profound. Sometimes the raw reflections are the most powerful.

As always, thank you for being part of this journey with me. I’ll be sharing more of my reflections and heart work on the podcast soon, so stay tuned for that.

On the JOYrney™ together,
Erica

P.S. If this message resonated with you, forward it to a friend who might need a heart-check too. Let’s finish this year with hearts wide open to God’s grace and wisdom.

At the Friends School of Baltimore Campus w/ the fam - May 2025 Happy FriYAYYYYY, Reader! At The Friends School of Baltimore Campus w/ the fam - May 2025 May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Last week the family and I headed down to Baltimore for my 20th high school reunion. Crazy – I know! 🙈 With this, and Mother’s Day just around the corner, I’ve been reflecting a lot on the journey I've been on the past 20 years of becoming a woman, and what emotional wellness looks like — especially for...

Happy FriYAYYYYY! 💎This Week’s #JOYGem 💎 You’re not forgotten. You’re being preparing for something greater than you imagined! Hey Reader, Have you ever felt like you’re doing everything right… but God still hasn’t moved? Same. I know what it’s like to pray, prepare, stay faithful—and still feel like you’re sitting in the waiting room, wondering if your name will ever be called. But in this week’s Bible study, I was reminded of something powerful: Just because God isn’t moving doesn’t mean He...

Your past doesn’t disqualify you — it prepares you Hey Reader, Have you ever felt like parts of your story were too messy to be meaningful? Same here. 🙋🏾♀️ But a couple weeks ago, I was reminded (yet again) that God doesn’t waste anything—especially not the messy parts. You don’t need to be “fully ready” to walk in your purpose. In fact… your transformation is often the very thing that makes you ready. This week on the JOYrney To Purpose® Podcast, we’re looking at Acts 9— where Saul’s radical...
